9 November – State Flag Day of the Republic of Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan celebrates the State Flag Day today. The Council of Ministers of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan approved the tricolour for the first time on 9 November 1918.

The tricolour flag of the Democratic Republic was adopted as the flag of the autonomous republic at the session of the Supreme Assembly held on the initiative and leadership of the Chairman of the Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic Heydar Aliyev. The Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Azerbaijan then approved the banner on 5 February 1991.

On 17 November 2009 the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev signed a Decree on establishing the State Flag Day. The document reads that the State Flag – heritage of the Democratic Republic – was adopted on 9 November 1918 at the Assembly of the government of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan. According to the decree, 9 November was declared the State Flag Day of the Republic of Azerbaijan in consideration of that fact.

Article 105 of the Labour Code was amended regarding the State Flag Day in November 2009. The addendum reads that 9 November was declared the State Flag Day in Azerbaijan and the holiday was included in the list of public holidays in the country.

The bright blue represents Azerbaijan’s Turkic heritage, the red stands for progress, and the green represents Islam, majority religion in the country.
